A two-year run as an advisor to Roger Federer looks likely to mark the end of the short coaching career of Stefan Edberg. The Swedish former great told Jonas Arnesson’s Challenge website that he is “99.9” per cent sure that he won’t go back to working with an ATP pro, instead preferring to develop the next generation of players at home in Scandinavia.

“It is 99.9 percent,” Edberg told Sweden’s top longtime tennis journalist. “(Working with Roger) was an amazing time and I had a very honorable task,” said player who turns 50 in January.

Edberg said he will be working with young talents at the Ready Play tennis academy in Växjö, a center run by Edberg and former pro Magnus Larsson along with ex-Davis Cup captain Calle Hage Forest. “I definitely advise young players to combine their tennis with studies. If you then do it over here, at college in the United States or otherwise does not matter,” said Edberg, quickly slipping back into his coaching role.

“The key is to have something to fall back on if tennis does not work. That kind of security can make a player positive.” Edberg retired in 1996 with six grand slam event titles and stayed 72 weeks on the No. 1 ranking.
