Richard Gasquet Tennis News

Richard Gasquet has paid the price for a back injury he aggravated in IPTL play this month, with Australian Open officials confirming the absence of the No. 9 from January’s grand slam event. He will also miss a 2016 start on the ATP in Doha.

The Frenchman joins a growing list of absentees at the season’s first major starting on January 18. Also unable to play: longtime Argentine wrist injury victim Juan del Potro, compatriot Juan Monaco and Aussie teenager Thanasi Kokkinakis, who is facing shoulder surgery and three months off court for rehab.

On the women’s side, Australian Casey Dellacqua will miss the major as she recovers from an October concussion suffered in China while Briton Laura Robson is delaying her wrist injury comeback after 18 months away, preferring to try and get fit for the French Open.

Gasquet’s absence will also affect the Kooyong Classic exhibition in Melbourne the week prior to the Open start, with the Frenchman to be replaced in that eight-man field.
