Novak Djokovic Presser 150

The ATP and WTA combined Miami Open could be set to stay in Key Biscayne, according to its men’s champion.

Novak Djokovic, who won the tournament by defeating Kei Nishikori in the final, said in an on-court interview that he had learned from ”reliable sources that we’re going to play in Miami for years to come.”

His comments followed a similar suggestion by women’s champion Victoria Azarenka when she won the trophy a day before. The IMG agency owns the tournament and represents both Djokovic and Azarenka. It has been involved in a legal dispute with a local figure who wants to block a $50 million redevelopment of the tournament facilities.

In response, there were suggestions by tournament director Adam Barrett that the tournament would look at moving elsewhere, saying that several cities had expressed an interest in the event. The Orlando mayor was said to have arrived during the tournament, though officials would not comment on his presence except to say it was his own decision.

But Djokovic did not say whether he had inside information or was simply in favor of the current location.

“I don’t think we need to have a conversation about moving the tournament anywhere else when we know that it’s going to stay here,” he said in press conference. “It’s been here for many years. It’s a successful event. Key Biscayne is a wonderful location for tennis.”

There has been no official announcement of any developments from tournament organizers.
