DAVID WHEATON IN WIMBLEDON FINALS |
David Wheaton of Tonka Bay, Minn., and doubles partner T.J. Middleton of Atlanta advanced to the finals of the Wimbledon Gentleman’s 35-and-over doubles draw. Wheaton and Middleton defeated Sweden’s Andres Jarryd and France’s Cedric Pioline 6-3, 7-6 (3) in today’s semifinals. Wheaton and Middleton will play the winner of Mark Woodforde/Todd Woodbridge of Australia and Wayne Ferriera (South Africa)/Rick Leach (United States) match on Sunday for the title.
Wheaton and Middleton are undefeated thus far as they finished 3-0 in their round-robin flight. The duo opened the tournament with a 7-6, 6-1 win over Gary Wayne Donnelly of the United States and Slobodan Zivojinovic of Yugoslavia. In their second match, Wheaton and Middleton defeated Goran Ivanisevic of Croatia and Henri Lenconte of France 6-4, 6-4. They remained unbeaten with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Neil Broad and Mark Petchey of Great Britain.
Wheaton, a USTA Northern Hall of Famer, and Middleton are looking for their second title in three years. The team won the championship in 2004 and placed second in 2005. |
