WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Davydenko: “I was [looking at the trophy], until 2008 so many names
there, like Djokovic, Federer, everyone, Sampras. In 2009, [it says]
Davydenko forever on this trophy. I think it's amazing. [In the] history
of the [Finals], for my name to be there is something amazing for me.”
“Before I was playing three set matches, pretty tough, mostly two hours.
[In the] final, I don't know, maybe I had good concentration. I was
surprising. I was coming in from the first point with hundred per cent
concentration. It was, I think, important for this match today.”
“It's really interesting next year for me because winning the last
tournament of the year, it's something amazing. I know for five years
[the tournament will] be in London now. I know it was a good stadium,
was really good. Everything was perfect. For sure we enjoy next year
here in London. I hope the organisation [will] be the same or even
better.”
Del Potro: “This tournament has a great champion, like Nikolay. He
worked hard to beat every player here this week. So maybe I have to
improve a little bit the little things. But he played much better than
me, and that's it. He played unbelievable tennis. He beat me in a good
way.”
“He's very strong. I never beat him on hard court or indoors. He's very
fast. He plays like PlayStation. He runs down everything. It is very
difficult to hit winners [against him]. But I think he is a great
champion. Nobody knows how we can beat him.”
Bob Bryan: “It means so much. It's pretty much what we play for now.
That's the goal. Play well in the Slams, but the ultimate goal is to
finish No. 1. We felt like it was stolen from us last year. Now we kind
of crept up on those guys and stole it from them this year. We feel like
it's a little bit of a payback.”
On Woodbridge/Woodforde’s record 61 titles: “It's in our sights now. To
be even considered in the same sentence with the Woodies makes us proud.
Those guys are our idols. I assume if we stay healthy, it's going to
happen some day. Definitely want to honour those guys. That's the
standard of doubles. Those guys were the best players ever. To be
mentioned with those guys is awesome.”
Mike Bryan: “To come full circle, do it in the last tournament, with so
much riding on this one match, it's huge. We're going to be talking
about this match for the rest of our lives. There's nothing sweeter than
this.”
“It was a tough match. I thought they played great. It was twice the
match it was in the round robin. We both kind of rose to the occasion
the first set. It could have gone either way. They won more points in
the first set. I thought we just won the big points. We scraped through
it.”
Ram: “[It’s] very disappointing. [To] get to the Finals and lose in the
final, it's tough. Especially when we play the Bryans, we like playing
against them, we beat them three times this year, once this tournament.
We feel like we have the right game to beat them. Well, also today we
showed that we had few chances, few break points. We didn't convert
them. Then in the tie-break, one point here and there. Close match. I
guess they needed it more, and they showed it in the second set. They
were much more energetic. They pushed themselves to No. 1.”
