Owen and Bruno named head coaches at Northern Arizona |
Dean Owen and Kim Bruno have been hired to take over the Men's and Women's Tennis programs at Northern Arizona University, Athletics Director Jim Fallis announced. The hiring gives each program a head coach after there was previously only one coach for both teams.
Bruno, who will serve as the women's tennis coach, is a NAU alum and comes to Flagstaff from the University of Connecticut where she served as a graduate assistant tennis coach for both the men's and women's teams for two years. She is a former standout for the Lumberjacks from 1996-2000. She helped lead the team to their first Big Sky Conference Tournament title as a freshman, and then twice more as a junior and senior, marking the only three conference titles for the team in the history of the program. Bruno also led the team to the program's only NCAA Tournament
appearance in 1999. Bruno was a three-time All-Big Sky second team selection, and was named to the All-Big Sky first team as a senior.
Bruno's coaching experiences prior to Connecticut include working as a tennis pro for Club Med and as an assistant women's tennis coach at Dartmouth in 2002. Bruno earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from NAU in 2000, and earned a master's degree in sports management from Connecticut in 2005.
Owen, a native of Cape Town, South Africa, comes to NAU from Boise State where he served for two seasons as an assistant women's tennis coach and another two as an assistant men's tennis coach. Owen is no stranger to the Big Sky Conference, having spent time as a head coach, assistant coach and student-athlete at Montana State.
As the head men's tennis coach at Montana State in 1999-2000, Owen led the team to its first-ever Big Sky Championship title and NCAA Regional appearance. Owen was also the assistant women's coach at the school in 1998-99, and graduated from the university with a bachelor's degree in business management in 2000. Owen played at Montana State for two seasons and was named to the All-Big Sky first team twice for singles and once for doubles. Prior to his career at Montana State, Owen played for two seasons at the University of Mobile where he was named a NAIA All-American singles player in 1996. |
