First day's results of Chris Evert Celebrity Classic
Stars from the tennis and entertainment worlds got together to brave the wind and weather in the first day of action at the 17th annual Chris Evert / Raymond James Pro-Celebrity Tennis Challenge, being played this weekend at the Delray Beach Tennis Center.

Before an estimated crowd of 3,642, tennis greats Chris Evert and Jim Courier, along with television star Alan Thicke had a good day on the courts with each picking up two wins.

Evert paired with television star Scott Foley to defeat Lindsay Davenport and musician Gavin Rossdale 6-4 in the day’s best match. The players in the opening match fought through the only bad weather of the day and a brief rain delay before Courier and supermodel Frederique ousted South of Nowhere’s Maeve Quinlan and ATP Tour player Vince Spadea 6-3. Evert posted her first win of the day when she teamed with Thicke to upset Taylor Dent’s first appearance at the event as Dent and Jon Lovitz fell 6-3. Dent and Lovitz didn’t fare much better in the last match of the day, as they fell to Courier and Thick, 6-3.

Action continues on Sunday at the Delray Beach Tennis Center with four matches scheduled to start at 11 a.m. In addition to the players from Saturday, former President George H. W. Bush will make his return to the event and tennis sensation Anna Kournikova is scheduled to make her debut at the annual event.
