FINALS REVIEW - DEL POTRO EXTENDS WASHINGTON STREAK;
Juan Martin del Potro extends his winning streak at the
Citi Open to 14 matches, including victories in his two
last Washington appearances in 2008 and ’09.
World No. 7 wins his second ATP World Tour 500
tournament of the season (Rotterdam), and his 15th title
• He joins fellow Argentine Guillermo Vilas
as a three-time champion at this event.
Isner, the Emirates Airline US Open Series leader, had
entered the final on an eight-match winning streak
following his Atlanta triumph a week earlier.
Isner also reached the final on his Washington debut in
2007 (l. to Roddick).
• Julien Benneteau and Nenad
Zimonjic capture their team’s second title. They won the
Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters this past April on their
partnership debut (d. Bryans).
WHAT THE PLAYERS SAID
Juan Martin del Potro: “It’s
amazing. I’m so happy to win here once again. Always
when you win a tournament, it’s special, it’s big. And
after Wimbledon, to be in my first tournament on hard
court, it means a lot. I’m looking forward to Montreal,
Cincinnati and the US Open. That gives me big confidence
to keep trying and getting closer to the top guys.”
Nenad Zimonjic: “It feels really great
to win such a big tournament. It’s a 500 series, and not
just that, it was a really strong field. It didn’t have
easy matches here. Very good teams played. To come after
a long break, to come this strong and win the tournament
without losing a set is really the best way you want to
come back to the tour.”
