For Eugenie Bouchard, the world of tennis is no
place for friendships. And the Canadian who is bidding for a second
straight grand slam semi-final at the French Open lives up to that
belief as she makes her way through the draw.
"Best friend on tour? I don't have one,"
said the straight-talking 20-year-old. "I don't think the tennis tour is
the place to have friends.
For me it's all competition. And, you
know, I think it's important to just remember that we're going to play
against each other in matches. It's not like we're teammates. To
me, it's kind of more competitive."
Like the top players, Bouchard spends her
tournament time with her team, in the manner of Maria Sharapova, who
says she never hangs around locker rooms. "I just do my job, I practice,
I play my match. I'm in the locker room, I change, I go home. It's not
really my social hub, I'd say. I don't know how else to say it."
