FINAL FACTS
GONZALEZ CLAIMS SECOND ATP TITLE OF THE SEASON
*No. 2 seed Fernando Gonzalez defeated Argentine Agustin Calleri 7-5, 6-3 in 1 hour, 23 minutes in the final of the 48th Priority Telecom Open.

*The 25-year-old Chilean wins his second ATP title of 2005, having won in Auckland (d. Olivier Rochus) earlier this year. He also improves his 2005 record to 32-14.

*Gonzalez collects his sixth career title in his 11th final. He went one step further than in 2004, when he was defeated by Martin Verkerk in the final of the Priority Telecom Open. The Chilean was making his third appearance in Amersfoort this year.

*In the final, Calleri scored the first break at 4-4 and served for the set at 5-4. But Gonzalez rallied back and won three games in a row, taking Calleri’s serve on two occasions. In the second set, “el bombardero de la Reina” took an early 3-1 lead and maintained his advantage until the end.

*Gonzalez, who didn’t drop a set in singles this week, defeated Kristof Vliegen, Robin Vik, Daniele Bracciali and David Sanchez on his way to the final, while Calleri took care of Julien Benneteau, Victor Hanescu, Melle Van Gemerden and Ivo Minar.

*Gonzalez is the third Chilean to claim the Dutch Open title after Marcelo Rios (1995) and Nicolas Massu (2003)

*Calleri was playing in his sixth career final (all on clay). His only career title to date came in 2003 in Acapulco (d. Mariano Zabaleta)

*Calleri’s last appearance in a final came in 2004 in Costa do Sauipe, when he lost to Gustavo Kuerten.

*Calleri can look back on Amersfoort as his best week of 2005, reaching his first ATP final of the year. The Argentine returned to competion after a two-months injury break (back) only three weeks ago. Before this week, his best 2005 result was a semifinal in Acapulco, where he lost to Albert Montanes.

*The Argentine from Rio Cuarto was making his first appearance in Amersfoort. He was aiming to become the third Argentine player to win the Dutch Open title after Guillermo Vilas (1974 & 1975) and Juan Ignacio Chela (2002).

*Gonzalez receives 35 INDESIT ATP 2005 Race points and €44,100, while Calleri is awarded 24 INDESIT ATP 2005 Race Points and €26,000.

GARCIA/HORNA WIN FIRST CAREER TITLE
*Playing in their third final of the year (Houston and Casablanca), No. 4 seeds Martin Garcia and Luis Horna claimed their first career title at the 2005 Priority Telecom Open after defeating top seeds and Athens gold medalists Fernando Gonzalez and Nicolas Massu 6-4, 6-4.

*Prior to 2005, the Garcia/Horna team had played only one tournament together, in Houston in 2004 where they reached the semifinals.

*This is Garcia's fourth career doubles title while Horna collects his first career title.

*Fernando Gonzalez, who showed an impressive form throughout the week, reaching the singles and doubles finals for the first time of his career, was looking to claim a third career doubles title (Athens Olympics w/ Massu & 2005 Valencia w/ Martin Rodriguez).

WHAT THE PLAYER SAID
Calleri: “I am not disappointed about today. I faced a great player. Fernando Gonzalez played an unbelievable match today.”

“I am flying in a couple of hours to Munich because I will be playing in Kitzbuhel next week.”

Gonzalez: “I am very happy about this victory. I played great tennis throughout the week and never lost a set.”
“Today, it got a little bit tricky when he broke me at 4-4 in the first set, but luckily I was able to change things around. “

“I reached the final here last year, I won this year, it is a tournament I enjoy and hopefully I will come back next year.”

“I am going to Kitzbuhel tonight and will then take some time off in Miami where I will get ready for the American hard court swing.”

Garcia: “I am Very happy to finally win a title with Luis [Horna]. After two finals in Casablanca and Houston it is great to finally win.”

Horna: “I am very proud of this title. It is my first career title and we needed three finals together to finally win a first trophy.”

“Unfortunately we don’t get in the doubles draw in Kitzbuhel and we might have different schedules in the coming weeks so we don’t know when we will play together again.”
